Aw yeah, another hand-smuggled interprovincial beer delivery from Devin in BC! Always appreciated, the beer gift is.
We’ve had a Steel & Oak before, their smoked Hefeweizen, which was delicious. Devin brought one of those as well, but that went to simple, unexamined enjoyment.
This time out is their Dark Lager. Moderate IBU and carbonation, it did sit in my fridge for a while, but there was no sediment when poured. This is one of Steel & Oak’s flagship brews, and I hope I get to try some more when I’m in BC at the end of the month. Here’s what we thought:
colour
Dan – cherrywood
Simon – opaque red
nose
Dan – acidic, dark chocolate, vinegar
Simon – dark german chocolate cake, vegetation
taste
Dan – dark coffee smokyness, lighter with grapefruit sweet/bitter
Simon – toasted oat, citrus, chocolate beans
finish
Dan – lightly bitter with stronger coffee or dark chocolate acidity
Simon – hershey’s chocolate syrup, lingers but good. tart
overall
Dan – 7.5/10
Simon – 8/10
Steel & Oak Dark Lager – 5% 650ml – $$ – British Columbia
Try it? Yes. Buy it? Yes.
