Basil Hayden’s 8y Kentucky Straight Bourbon with Dan

Staying in the USA for a little bit.  The lineage here is a bit thick: Basil Hayden’s only web presence is as part of The Original Small Batch Bourbon Collection site, which also mentions Knob Creek, but then links to their full site.  The Original Small Batch Bourbon Collection is a licensed trademark of Beam Global Spirits & Wines (a massive company that owns many brands you’ve seen or will see reviewed here), which Kentucky Springs Distilling Company owns the copyright to.  Kentucky Springs Distilling Company appears to have no web presence.

Enough genealogy.  This bourbon is fantastic.  Apparently the secret is rye added to the standard bourbon corn mash to add depth to the flavour.  Seems to work, here’s what we thought:

smell
dan – brown sugar, caramel, “warm & soft”
simon – toffee, brown sugar, mouthwash

neat
dan – weird sweetness, damp wood, creamy, complicated
simon – nice burn, good mouthfeel, a lot going on

splash
dan – caramel corn, damp picnic basket, sweet
simon – very subtle mint, salt

Basil Hayden’s 8y Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey – 40% 750ml – $51.70 – USA

Try it? Definitely! Buy it? Absolutely!

this is the bourbon i whole heartedly recommend to highland malt drinkers who want to try bourbons.

it’s the older more refined sibling of the old grandad (it shares mash recipe)
