As teased on Tuesday, here’s the first of the new offerings from Innis & Gunn in this year’s Holiday Gift Pack, the Marmalade IPA!
The intense citrus of this offering is achieved by “infusing Scottish marmalade”, but also using mandarina bavaria hops, an especially orange fragrant hop varietal. This hop is only 5 years old, and was developed at the Hop Research Centre in Germany. Sounds like a cool place to visit, even if I can feel the hop-fueled migraine already.
My dad Bob is a fan of both marmalade and India pale ales, but not usually of flavoured beers. For this one, however, he asked to be specifically quoted “as someone who detests flavoured beer, this is very acceptable”. Here’s what else we thought:
nose
Dad – hoppy, no marmalade
Simon – orange juice with pulp from concentrate
taste
Dad – marmalade for sure
Simon – very bitter, hoppy. too much
finish
Dad – very easy, nothing offensive
Simon – clean, less bitter than taste
overall
Dad – 8/10
Simon – 6.5/10
Innis & Gunn Marmalade India Pale Ale – 5.6% 330ml – $ – Scotland
Try it? Yes. Buy it? If you’re on board with flavoured beer
