Jameson Caskmates Stout Edition. A bit more title than necessary, since this is the only version of Caskmates available at the moment, or mentioned anywhere on the internet, but whatever.
Aging beer in whisky barrels is one of our favourite tricks at iScotch and aging whisky in the used barrels of other liquors is only slightly younger an idea than whisky itself. In this case, local brewery Franciscan Well was selected to provide the barrels. Great news for them, I imagine. Jameson is no small distillery.
And it works. You might worry the Irish whiskey notes might be lost, but this is a good match of beer and whisky. Here’s what we thought:
nose
Dan – very earthy wood, with hints of dried apricots, honeyish sweetness, fruity, cereal, woody, winey
Simon – candy pear juice, fruit, floral, cereal
neat
Dan – light, dry, cocoa, light vanilla w slightly woody leather
Simon – light & dry, clean, deep, complex for irish, tang, leather, metallic
finish
Dan – medium length, clean
Simon – medium, just a presence
splash
Dan – brings out cereals & bitters, sweetness falls
Simon – cereal, more metal, sweet syrup affect
overall
Dan – 8.6/10
Simon – 7.9/10
